MAGGIE B

A 62ft gaff schooner designed for an experienced American sailor with plans for circumnavigation.

NIGEL IRENS says:"Whilst the boat will be perceived as having been inspired by traditional designs, the objective has simply been to create the kind of efficient and easily maintained vessel that is needed for world cruising."

She has a moderate draft and carries a centre board. A clean and simple rig includes a boomless and overlapping foresail.

Her American owner describes the project as a "fusion schooner" for its combination of traditional design and modern technologies.

ROXANE

In 1994 NIGEL IRENS designed and built for himself a new type of cruising yacht, the shoal-draught, fast-cruising lugger Roxane. This unique vessel soon became established as a modern classic, effectively combining simplicity of design with modern materials technology. The following year a smaller version, Romilly, followed her into production.

The two boats have been built for many years by Bridgend Boat Co Ltd at Plymouth (UK), but as Bridgend are currently very busy working on a series of production powerboats the building programme has been taken on by Concord Beheer B.V. in the Netherlands as the new owners of the moulds.

For more information on any technical aspect of the design please contact NIGEL IRENS.

ROMILLY

Romilly was conceived for estuary and coastal sailing. The class name boat was built for Bill Stanton, a very experienced boat owner and friend of the Roxane project from the outset.

It was felt that Romilly would work best as a honest open boat with a small cuddy forward rather than trying to squeeze a minature yacht interior into her. As a result the cockpit is sumptuous and makes sailing Romilly a real delight.

In other respects she does handle like a minature yacht. With her high ballast ratio she carries her way well through stays and is sure footed when sailing in the kind of gusty conditions found in the Salcombe estuary, which was to be the boats' home port.

For those wishing to home-build, plans are available for a strip plank version. For further information refer to Ed Burnett's website.

ROANNA

In 1998 NIGEL IRENS and Nick Hallam designed and built a bigger version of the original Roxane. This three-masted vessel is based on similar principles to her smaller sisters Roxane and Romilly.

Roanna was built on a farm in South Devon, UK, with Nick Hallam acting as project manager for the owner - a successful and cost-effective build solution.

Belated sea trials were carried out in 2005 with most of the building crew on board! The boat showed a suprising turn of speed when competing in the Old Gaffers' Association 'Yarmouth Rally'. She has also proved to be a competent and comfortable offshore cruiser.

WESTERNMAN 40

In association with Westernman Design Inc, NIGEL IRENS and Ed Burnett developed 40ft and 50ft cruising yacht designs with reference to traditional sailing pilot cutters.

The fourth 40-footer is now afloat. The first 50-footer was launched in July 1998.

The first Westernman was designed for yachting journalist Tom Cunliffe as a replacement for his 52ft original Bristol Channel pilot cutter Hirta. Tom is widely regarded as an authority on this type of vessel, and his class name boat, Westernman, was designed with the benefit of his experience.

SInce the launch of Westernman, Covey Island Boatworks have produced three further vessels to this design; the latest of these is Chance, pictured here.

WESTERNMAN 50

In association with Westernman Design Inc, NIGEL IRENS and Ed Burnett developed 40ft and 50ft cruising yacht designs with reference to traditional sailing pilot cutters.

The Westernman 50 was built for a UK client who required the boat to be classed for sail training. Since her launch she has taken part in a number of Sail Training Association events.
