MOLLY BÁN

It is now four years since the wooden prototype of the 12 metre RANGEBOAT first hit the water since which time the design has a solid reputation as a comfortable and seaworthy offshore vessel - capable of sustaining a relaxed 14 knot cruise speed on some 80 horsepower (60 Kw).

As waterline length is a dominant function in the powering curve for this type of hull we were obviously keen to try out an extrapolated version of the design. Enter Theo Rye (who had been involved with the development of MAGGIE B) who had been discussing our design with his friend and client Hal Sisk.

Hal was looking for just such a vessel for general cruising and also to act as live-aboard tender for his exquisite little G.L. Watson designed cutter the PEGGY BAWN (restored under Theo Rye's care).

Thus was born the design for MOLLY BÁN (pronounced 'Bawn') - now under construction by TUCO YACHT VÆRFT in Denmark for delivery next spring (2008). Images of the build in progress are on their website.

MOLLY BÁN will displace about 16 tonnes on a waterline length of 18.6m, giving her a low displacement/length ratio- which is key to the performance of this kind of hull.

Orginally designed with an overall length of 17 metres (55' 10") Hal took little persuading to add a couple of extra metres aft - partly to help reduce her displacement/length ratio and also to accommodate a decent tender so the boat can free herself of the constant need to seek out marina berths.

14m MOTOR LAUNCH

Following extensive testing of the Rangeboat development began on a family of boats based on the same principles.

This 14m variant was commissioned by a Dutch client who wanted to retain the same layout but with more generous proportions. .

At this size there is the option to have a 2 cabin layout with 1 double and 1 twin, which could prove to be a very practical solution.

17m MOTOR LAUNCH

This 17m version offers 6 berths in 3 double cabins with 3 heads and 2 showers. When fitting a block of cabins in the forward end of a vessel like this there is often a problem resulting from the fact that the necessary access corridor occupies a lot of prime volume at the expense of space in the cabins where it is needed. In this case we have suggested placing the galley in such a way that it also serves as the corridor, which we feel is an effecient arrangement.

As the performance of these semi-displacment hulls is very much linked to their waterline length it follows that the bigger boats are more efficient for a given speed. That said it is important to understand that this hull form should not be used if cruising speeds in excess of a speed/length ratio of about 2.5. are required - in this case 18.4 knots.(i.e.2.5 x the square root of the waterline length in feet). It would not be practical to install more power than is necessary to achieve a speed/length ratio of about 3.5.

50ft CRUISER/RACER

This boat has been designed as a follow-on from the NIGEL IRENS/Dominique Pedron designed NOOTKA class, originally built for Mike Birch and Claude Develay in 1991.

The three boats originally built to this design have provided great ocean racing and fast cruising for their owners, and the time seems to be ripe to update the design - faithfully retaining the original brief that called for a performance boat that was nevertheless simple enough to be raced, cruised and maintained by a private owner - without the need for the kind of support crew associated with the 60ft ORMA class trimarans.

INTER-ISLAND FAST FERRY

This design has been commissioned by the present owners of the original iLAN Voyager.

After 11 years of providing tourists with a means of visiting neighbouring islands in the Cape Verde Republic, they now intend to build on their experience by moving up to a 20-passenger vessel, which will allow more visitors to reach more of these fascinating islands in greater comfort.
